John Denver was a superstar artist who was a hit with his pop-folk songs and many of them based in Colorado. Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. was born in Roswell new Mexico, but fell in love Colorado. Danoff created the track along with Johnny Cash in mind but after Denver was introduced to an earlier version he knew right away it was destined to be a hit single.
